A Word or Two About Democracy

Dear friend,

I want to acknowledge what is unfolding in the United States. How disquieting it is, even as a citizen of another place, to contemplate the injustices being directed at communities all across America.

It’s a lot of shouting and dangerous, poisonous ideas being slung like excrement.

It’s ignorance and greed and malicious stupidity we don’t need.

Wisdom—we do.

Corporations that train their algorithms to suppress some voices whilst amplifying others—we no longer need them.

And for what would we need them any longer?

To make profits to reward a small group, a few people?

At the expense of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, daughters, sons, friends, neighbors, and the animals, plants, oceans, and land?

The foundation of life is connection.

I don’t know how it’s going to be for you where you are, or how it will be here.

Just that democracy means every voice is heard.

That we learn to listen.

And if we are told to shut up,

We keep the conversations going.

Well into the night.

Watching the first rays of dawn.
