Dear Friend,
To be curious.
An eager wish to know or learn about something, or someone, or some place. A condition, A state of being, natural to the human.
An open gate. A window letting in the light of the sun, the stars and the moon.
Ocean air.
The sound of rain.
Sand from the Sahara blown across the world.
Freedom from the weight of the ‘know it all’.
True friend to peace.
Not to know.
To discover, explore, learn.
To grow.
To go on an adventure.
To leave and come back, again.
And again and again.
To step into eternity.
This thing about the death of the cat?
When you’re a kid and people say things, shrug and make a face like they know something you don’t. They do know a lot, some of it useful. How to use an oven or when to water the plants or what day of the week it is.
Using the power of words, they say things like ‘curiosity killed the cat’. It makes a world in your mind. Can scare you into not asking questions. As if the way is closed.
But I just looked it up. The original proverb was to do with worrying.
Worrying killed the cat.
It is said that "a cat has nine lives," yet care would wear them all out.(Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, 1898)
‘Care’ as in ‘to worry’.
Ben Johnson used the proverb his 1598 play ‘Every Man in His Humour’, and William Shakespeare took it up a year later in ‘Much Ado about Nothing.’
Curiosity did not kill the cat. The cat, black with green eyes, not much more than a kitten, with a gentle face, a natural comedian, peeking around a corner, whiskers twitching, soft pads padding. The cat is alive and well. Purring. Without a care, exploring, coming home to a warm lap and dream filled naps.
It is safe to be curious.
Unsafe to dwell in a dead world made only of the past.
Curiosity is a stream you can follow all of the way home. Companion to wonder.
Lift your eyes and look around you. At the very least, each object you land on is a thrumming matrix of pure energy. Our sciences agree on this.
Is it a living thing?
Then it is a community of cells collaborating, communicating, singing songs of creation. Bursting with light.
Life is a miracle.
We live in a miraculous universe.
At the centre of the miracle, you.
You are a miracle.
The elements that make up your physical form were forged in the explosion of stars, all the way back at the start of time. The origin of the universe.
Angels watch over you and await your instructions.
Child of creation.
Lover of peace.
Awake now, the cat is pawing at your face. Claws sheathed.
Follow your curiosity.
This world is friend to you.
The way is open.
The cat
Very much
Alive and well.
Till tomorrow
Be Curious.
Love
Mikey
