Dear Friend,
The image came of clouds of fear encircling the earth. Although right now in this moment- exactly where I am, there is only safety, I see images of my fellow human beings suffering. Whether it is the vulnerability of the people on my city’s streets, or the people in the news subjected to war and conflict.
The scale of the suffering is such that it seems without end.
The future uncertain. Today it is them, it could so easily be me.
When I was a boy I looked to authority figures for safety and guidance. Now when we look at our institutions what do we see?
Today I will look for signs of joy and they will come. It does us no good to be overwhelmed with fear. Fear narrows the beam of our consciousness and focuses it on the threat so that we cannot see the alternatives that surround us.
This is why fear is weaponised against peace.
Peace and connection are bad for business if your business is inequality, dominance, scarcity and control.
Scare City.
Forgive the pun.
When fear comes, as it sometimes does, most often in the early hours, I get up and sit in meditation and I ask for help. Who am I asking? The words I use will be different from yours.
For me it can be my teachers and guides. Loved ones who have passed on. Angels. Divine Mother. Jesus Christ. Saints. Krishna. Father. Brother.
Sometimes it feels like there is no response, not immediately.
Then like a sparrow on the windowsill an idea will come pecking.
Moving and stretching the body, calming the breath. Widening the search light. The sun rises. The fear melts like a shadow receding. It will no doubt return and the dance will continue. Light and shade.
It’s hard to think straight when we’re scared.
Perhaps the most rebellious act of our times is to connect to our soul?
Prayer or meditation or contemplation. Sitting or walking or running.
Ancient practices uniquely human.
Looking for moments of joy.
Gestures of affection.
Till tomorrow
Love
